Mindfulness is a form of remembering - a way of coming back to the moment and home to ourselves, bridging the emotion gap so that we can respond more compassionately and with greater wisdom.
Mindfulness training can help us realize, open to, and explore the infinite possibilities available to us so that we can exercise some degree of choice in how we relate and respond to ourselves, others, and the world. Through practice, we can develop greater awareness of our ways of looking and the wisdom to choose a perspective that is of greatest benefit to all.
Like a tailor makes a “bespoke suit” for a particular customer, our unexamined minds have a tendency tailor our own “bespoke truth” that satisfies our preferences. But, when we ignore or exclude aspects of reality that we don't prefer, we miss out on important information that could be helpful in making wise choices.
When we practice mindfulness, much of what we are practicing is being accurately self- and other-aware. Bias and stereotyping are distortions of reality. Mindfulness helps us learn to see through some of the illusions and distortions our human minds are vulnerable to and make wise decisions about them.
